Chabad of Zambia is a home away from home for every Jew that finds themselves in our country, a place where everyone is welcome - regardless of affiliation, level of knowledge or observance.

We strive to create a warm, welcoming environment to explore and experience our heritage in a non-judgmental and inviting atmosphere, right here in the heart of Africa.

We are founded on the principle that, while Jews may embrace many levels of observance in their personal lives, there should be a place for all Jews - no labels - to develop a sense of community, to enhance the experience of being Jewish, and to learn and enjoy Judaism.

A: Chabad Zambia is one of more than 4000 branches of today's largest international organization involved with Jewish education and outreach programs.

What they offer

Chabad of Zambia is a Jewish community centre in Lusaka, led by Mrs. Rivky Hertzel.

There is a synagogue on the premises. Visitors are welcomed for Shabbat and holiday meals. Kosher meals are available on a meal plan. Accommodation for guests can be arranged. They kosher kitchens for the community.

Classes run regularly, one-to-one study can be arranged, courses from the Jewish Learning Institute are taught and public lectures are held. There is a library.

For children there is after-school programmes, a children's club and a mother-and-child group.

Older children and young adults have bar and bat mitzvah instruction and a young professionals' circle.

They officiate at weddings, circumcisions and funerals. Couples are prepared for marriage. A chevra kadisha serves the community.

The center visits patients in hospital, visits Jewish prisoners, serves military personnel, looks after the elderly, distributes food packages, provides humanitarian aid and runs a soup kitchen.

There is a women's group. Mezuzos and tefillin can be checked here. The building is wheelchair accessible.
