Chabad at University of Maryland was established in 1995, to serve the Jewish community at University of Maryland. UMD Chabad is a place where everyone is welcome, regardless of affiliation or prior level of knowledge. Its sole purpose is to create a warm, welcoming environment to explore and experience Judaism's warm and relevant spiritual inspirations in a non-judgmental and inviting atmosphere.

Since its inception, UMD Chabad strives to meet the needs of the community with religious services, and social events, as well as an array of programming including: weekly Shabbat dinners, immersive holiday celebrations, educational fellowships, community service initiatives, and leadership opportunities that build a vibrant Jewish campus life.

Chabad at University of Maryland is a local, independent and financially self-supporting entity. Every dollar that we receive comes from the generosity of people like you. We are a 501(c)(3) organization and your donations are fully tax deductible.

Founded in 1995 by Rabbi Eli and Nechama Backman, UMD Chabad has been built alongside their family Mendel, Yossel & Gita, Chaiky, Beryl, Avremel, Malky, Nena, and Miriam.

What they offer

Bais Menachem Chabad Jewish Student Center is a Chabad house on campus in College Park, led by Rabbi Eli Backman.

There is a synagogue on the premises. Visitors are welcomed for Shabbat and holiday meals. They kosher kitchens for the community.

Classes run regularly and one-to-one study can be arranged. There is a library.

They officiate at weddings and funerals. Couples are prepared for marriage.
