Chabad of S. Barbara began over 40 years ago. Today we have three facilities, four Rabbis, and serve every demographic of the Jewish community.

Rabbi Mendel and Rochel Loschak have been serving the Jewish community in S. Barbara since 2003. In August 2003, They founded Chabad at UCSB in Isla Vista, growing it from a small apartment Friday night dinner, to a flourishing Jewish Center. In 2014, Rabbi Mendel assumed the leadership of his late father, Rabbi Yosef Loschak, who together with his wife, Devorah Loschak, founded Chabad of S. Barbara in 1979.

Chabad of S. Barbara is dedicated to serving all Jews throughout S. Barbara County with unconditional love, respect and concern.

Chabad is committed to promoting Jewish knowledge, awareness and practice, strengthening Jewish identity and affording every Jew the opportunity to experience the joy and vibrancy of his or her Jewish heritage.

What they offer

Chabad of S. Barbara is a Chabad house in S. Barbara, led by Rabbi Mendel Loschak.

There is a synagogue on the premises. Visitors are welcomed for Shabbat and holiday meals. They kosher kitchens for the community.

Classes run regularly, one-to-one study can be arranged, courses from the Jewish Learning Institute are taught and public lectures are held. There is a library.

For children there is a preschool, a Hebrew school, after-school programmes and a children's club.

Older children and young adults have a teen club, bar and bat mitzvah instruction and a bat mitzvah club.

They officiate at circumcisions and funerals. Couples are prepared for marriage. A chevra kadisha serves the community.

The center visits patients in hospital, visits Jewish prisoners and looks after the elderly.
