Rabbi Mendel Hecht was raised in Brooklyn, New York. Mendel studied in rabbinical school in the United States, Germany, and Italy, and achieved rabbinic ordination in 2015. He then pursued further study in several areas including kashrut and nikur, and became a certified Shochet. His experience includes teaching and promoting Jewish activities across the United States and Europe.

Esther, born and raised in London UK, studied music and dance as a child, and pursued further studies in Judaism in Israel and New York, where alongside studying she taught in Hebrew Schools, Jewish Pre Schools, and directed school holiday camps. Her creative approach brings Judaism to life to people from young to old.

Rabbi Mendel & Esther married in 2017 and are proud parents of four children. In 2019 Rabbi Mendel and Esther visited New Zealand, and settled in Auckland where they are dedicated to strengthen the Auckland community by promoting Jewish pride, education and celebration.

Chabad-Lubavitch is a philosophy, a movement, and an organization. It is considered to be the most dynamic force in Jewish life today.

What they offer

Chabad of Auckland is a synagogue in Auckland, led by Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hecht.

There is a synagogue on the premises. Visitors are welcomed for Shabbat and holiday meals. Kosher meals are available on a meal plan. A kosher store is run here. They kosher kitchens for the community.

Classes run regularly, one-to-one study can be arranged and courses from the Jewish Learning Institute are taught.

For children there is a preschool, a children's club and a mother-and-child group.

Older children and young adults have a teen club and bar and bat mitzvah instruction.

They officiate at weddings, circumcisions and funerals. Couples are prepared for marriage.

The center visits patients in hospital, visits Jewish prisoners, looks after the elderly and provides humanitarian aid.

There is a women's group. Mezuzos and tefillin can be checked here. The building is wheelchair accessible.
