The Jews in Rome have been living there for over two thousand years, making it the oldest Jewish community in Europe.

In 1555 the Pope issued a law that forced all Jews to live in the ghetto, in 1870 the ghetto was liberated.

During World War II, the Nazis deported 2091 Jews from Rome to extermination camps, of which only 101 returned to Rome.

In 1967 the Jews in Tripoli, Libya were forced to flee their country and many of them immigrated to Rome and influenced the life of the Jewish community there.

What they offer

Chabad Piazza Bologna, Rome is a Chabad house in Rome, led by Rabbi Menachem Lazar.

Visitors are welcomed for Shabbat and holiday meals. There is a Judaica shop. They kosher kitchens for the community. A mikveh is available. Dishes can be toveled here.

Classes run regularly, one-to-one study can be arranged and public lectures are held.

For children there is after-school programmes and a children's club.

Older children and young adults have a teen club, bar and bat mitzvah instruction, a bar mitzvah club and a bat mitzvah club.

They officiate at weddings, circumcisions and funerals. Couples are prepared for marriage.

The center visits patients in hospital, looks after the elderly and distributes food packages.
