At the corner of Mariankatu and Aleksanterinkatu, in the heart of the historic Kruununhaka district, stands one of Helsinki's most significant architectural treasures. Completed in 1765, this building is the second-oldest stone structure in central Helsinki, surpassed in age only by the nearby Sederholm House. It is also one of the very few surviving buildings in the city center dating back to the era of Swedish rule, making it a rare link to Helsinki's earliest history. For more than 250 years, this address has stood witness to the city's evolution — from a modest coastal trading town under Swedish and later Russian administration, to the thriving European capital Helsinki has become today.

The building was constructed to house Helsinki's customs and packing operations, serving as the official Sea Customs Chamber where goods arriving by ship were inspected, weighed, taxed, and stored. Plans for the building were formally approved in 1757, with construction beginning shortly thereafter under the direction of master builder Samuel Berner. The building was completed in 1765, at which point it took on the distinctive external form that remains recognizable today. At the time, Helsinki's harbor activity centered directly around this site, and the building played an essential role in the city's maritime trade. Vessels arriving from ports across the Baltic and beyond brought their cargo to be processed here, with dedicated spaces set aside for customs inspection, weighing, and packing. The upper floor also served a civic function, hosting meetings of the city's council members.

Beyond its role in commerce, the building holds a deeper significance in Helsinki's military history. It was constructed as part of a far more ambitious 18th-century vision: a plan, associated with the fortification efforts of Augustin Ehrensvärd, to encircle Helsinki with a chain of defensive bastions, incorporating public buildings directly into the city's fortifications. The customs and packing house was intended to form one link in this defensive chain, and its construction was funded in large part through resources allocated for the crown's fortification works. Because of this military purpose, the building was constructed with unusual sturdiness and positioned precisely along the line of the planned defensive wall — which is why, to this day, it sits at a distinct angle relative to the surrounding street grid. Although the broader fortification project was never realized, this building remains the only portion of that ambitious plan that was ever completed.

As Helsinki's harbor and customs operations expanded and eventually relocated to larger facilities during the nineteenth century, the building's original purpose came to an end. Rather than falling into disuse, it was repeatedly repurposed to serve the city's changing needs. Over the following century, it housed an auction chamber, whose interiors were redesigned in 1884 by architect Gustaf Nyström, and later became home to the Kruununhaka police station in the early twentieth century. In more recent decades it served municipal functions, including as the City of Helsinki's parking supervision office. Despite these many changes in use, the building's historic character and architectural integrity were carefully maintained throughout, a testament to its enduring importance to the city.
