Chabad of Tasmania was founded in 1984 under the auspices of the Lubavitcher Rebbe , in the home of David and Pnina Clark in Hobart, with the assistance of Rabbi Yossi Gordon as visiting Rabbi.

In 1986, when the Lubavitcher Rebbe encouraged the purchase and/or expansion of Chabad Houses throughout the world, Rabbi Joseph Gutnick purchased a historic mansion at 5 Brisbane St. Launceston as a permanent home for Chabad. Rabbi Yossi Gordon as traveling Shliach, operated the Chabad House and its activities for 25 years with the invaluable help of local volunteer Gershon Goldsteen.

What they offer

Chabad of Tasmania is a Chabad house in Kings Meadows, led by Rabbi Yochanan Gordon.

There is a synagogue on the premises. Visitors are welcomed for Shabbat and holiday meals. Accommodation for guests can be arranged. A kosher store is run here. There is a Judaica shop. They kosher kitchens for the community.

Classes run regularly, one-to-one study can be arranged, courses from the Jewish Learning Institute are taught and public lectures are held. There is a library.

For children there is after-school programmes and a children's club.

Older children and young adults have bar and bat mitzvah instruction, a bar mitzvah club and a bat mitzvah club.

They officiate at weddings, circumcisions and funerals. Couples are prepared for marriage. A chevra kadisha serves the community.

The center visits patients in hospital, visits Jewish prisoners, looks after the elderly, distributes food packages and provides humanitarian aid.

Mezuzos and tefillin can be checked here. The building is wheelchair accessible.
